MAJOR ACTIVITIES DURING XII PLAN


NATIONAL AQUIFER MAPPING & MANAGEMENT


National Aquifer Mapping:

CGWB, KR has taken up National Aquifer Mapping and Management studies which is the flagship programme of MOWR to map and document the characteristics and behaviour of the aquifers on 1:50,000 scale.  An area of 5232 Sq. km is being covered under the program during XII Plan in Kerala & U.T of Lakshadweep for Aquifer map and Management plan.

  1. Highlights of Work Done:

    1. Aquifer Map and Management plan for Chittur- Malampuzha block, Palakkad district in hard rock area(700 sq.km) completed and published.

    2. Aquifer Map and Management plan for Coastal Aquifer System covering 4500 sq.km is under progress.

  2. Training Programmes:

    1. Under the aegis of Rajiv Gandhi Training Instituted, State level (Tier –II) and Block level (Tier – III) training programs are organized for stakeholders on various aspects of National Aquifer Mapping Program.

    2. Tier II Training Programme:

      1. Under Tier –II training programme on Aquifer Information System & Management, ten programs have been organized for ground water professionals  from various Central and state departments

    • Other IEC Activities:

    1. Two State level painting competitions each in Kerala & U.T of Lakshadweep were organized for school children to create awareness on water conservation.

    2. Four State Level workshops organized  with focal themes  

      1. Sustainable management of Ground Water resources on 24-25th January 2013 at Vatakara, Kozhikode district.

      2. Analysis of Capacity Building Needs for Aquifer Mapping & Water Resources Management in Kerala on 19th March 2013 at Trivandrum.

      3. Water Conservation in Kerala, Prospects and Challenges on 21st March 2014 at Trivandrum.

    3. Mass awareness campaign including workshop, distribution of pamphlets and brochures and hoardings on the need for water conservation organized in U.T of Lakshadweep during March 2014.

    4. As part of the ‘Hamara Jal, Hamara Jeevan’ campaign of MoWR, RD & GR, Government of India, district level workshops were organized in all districts of Kerala and U.T of Lakshadweep. Jal Grams were identified in all the districts as part of the campaign.

    5. Under the ‘Jal KrantiAbhiyan’ of MoWR, RD & GR, Government of India, Orders for constituting State, District level and Block level Committees have  been issued by the Government of Kerala. Two ‘Jal Grams’ each have been identified in all districts of the State as per directions of the Ministry.

    6. Water Security Plan for 2 Jalgrams has been approved by District Level committee.

    • Publications:

      • Atlas on “Aquifer Systems of Kerala” prepared and released by Honourable Minister of Water Resources and uploaded in the website of CGWB for the benefit of the common public and other stakeholders.

      • A total of 30scientific papers were published in journals / presented in workshops or seminars.

      • Second generation District Ground Water information brochures of Kerala   (14 no.) and U.T of Lakshadweep.
