Ground Water Resource Assessment

Objectives :
Asses fresh, brackish & saline resources
Study status of availability and replenishment
Categorise areas based on development
Provide inputs for funding Institutions
Ascertain status of availability periodically
Work out irrigation potential
Prepare long term development & augmentation programmes
Develop & implement management strategies

Activities :
Formation of State level Ground Water Estimation Committees
Collection and analysis of data-short & long term
Resource Estimation in every five years
Publication of final reportrs - State & National levels

Achievements :
Based on GEC (1984) norms the GWRE was reconciled in state of W.B in 1985
Later it was further refined and reconciled in 1991
Only Pursura block, Hgli dist falls under ‘ Dark’ category
Total 18 blocks falls under grey
Ground water estimation in respect of West Bengal has been successfully completed. For further information
contact Director, Central Ground Water Board (CGWB),ER region,Kolkata.
Based on GEC-97 norms the reconciliation of G.W resources for 2000-01 is under progress.
