In Madhya Pradesh, geophysical surveys for groundwater resource
development were initiated by GSI/Exploratory Tubewell Organization, Govt of India, which
is now CGWB, during early sixties through geophysical logging of exploratory boreholes.
However, surface geophysical surveys started in systematic manner only since 1974 by CGWB
onwards. During the initial stage, electrical resistivity method was the only technique in
vogue and was utilized as a source finding technique. Gradually other techniques like
electro-magnetic, seismic refraction, magnetic were also initiated. In the state, during
1976 a comprehensive geophysical study programme was started under Indo-British
collaboration Betwa Project by applying electrical, electromagnetic, seismic, magnetic,
gravity and geophysical logging methods. Presently, the CGWB is the apex organization for
applying geophysical techniques for various applications in groundwater resources
development.
