Keeping pace with technological development in the Board, Regional Office Data Centre (RODC) in Raipur was set up with financial assistance from the World Bank. It utilizes state-of-the art technologies for the purpose of processing, storage and dissemination of data in a systematic manner. RODC houses
the Data Processing Centre (DPC)
and
the Data Storage Centre (DSC).

Similar Data Processing and Storage Centres have been established in different organiations at several places with a National Data Storage Centre in NewDelhi. This is a part of the HIS (Hydrogeological Information System) which has been envisaged to integrate the countrywide data bases so that they can be disseminated to the different users. A generalised structure of HIS is given in Fig. 1 and 2.

In DPC, the field data are computerized and subjected to 2 levels of validation, primary and secondary including hydrogeological validation. Othe activities of DPC are analysis, processing and reporting. Here the data is stored in temporary data bases. At the end of hydrogeological year, once the data has been properly validated, processed (authenticated), data is transferred to data storage center.

    • GWDES (Ground Water Data Entry System):

CGWB has been using GWDES since 1999 for computerisation of historical data. It has a MSAccess Database at the back end. Front end has been developmed using VB. It has modules like WQDES (for Chemical data) and DATAAnalyst (for harmonic analysis etc.). Recently data already entered in GWDES has been concverted into dedicated software GEMS.

    • Dedicated software (GEMS)

Groundwater Estimation and Management System(GEMS) has been developed by M/s TataInfotechLtd. for CGWB. This software uses industry standard RDBMS (Oracle ). This essential for long-term sustainability of the data sets. Necessary features like data security, protection from data correction and provision of controlled accessibility is part of the system design. An efficient and user friendly query system helps in data retrieval. GEMS includes GIS support to visualize and analyse spatial data. GEMS facilitates data entry, processing, validation and dissemination of periodic or annual report. The data analysis tool provided in GEMS has all the capabilities of spatio temporal analysis of hydrological data. Several methods of multivariate statistics, timeseries and geostatistics have been provided. Most of the generally used variograms used in spatial statistics have been developed in the system. Various interpolation techniques including Kriging has been included. Different modules like grainsize analysis, fence diagram for strtigraphic correlation, water quality data analysis, geophysical profiling/ sounding data handling and analysis have also been provided. The data-capture module handles all sorts of spatial data collected from landscape elements from toposheets, satellite data, and attribute data auch as: Well-site details,Geologic, geomorphologic descriptions,Assembly,Aquifer data, Well-log lithology, geophysical logs, Well performance and hydraulics, Water quality, Rainfall, Depth of water table and Ground water abstractions. The statistics module of the application identifies inherent characteristics in the observed data, which is essential for appropriate model identification and use. Spatio-temporatl Data analysis tools have been provided.

Data Processing and Data Storage functions are separated. Data Processing and validation is a technical task for which hydrogeologists/ geohydrologists are qualified. Whereas final data storage i.e. library function is the domain of data base managers. This distinction is absolutely necessary for number of reasons.

Processing and storage are different disciplines, which require different expertise, tools, hardware support, activities and responsibilities.

  • To guarantee discipline in building the data base and its sustainability in the long run.
  • To make sure that for design and decision making data are being used which passed all steps of validation
  • To avoid mixing of fully processed data and data under processing
  • To ensure compatible database configuration by all agencies
  • To mainatain a professional data security system
  • For an easier upgrading/ replacement of either data storage or data processing tools in case of new development.

Data Storage Centre provides information on spatial and temporal characteristics of water quantity and quality variables / parameters describing the water respurces/ water use system in all the states. It provides a valuable and convenient source of information for decision / policy makers. At the DSC metadata will be available about the data stored in the database. Data that flows are of the following types:

  • Hydrgeological Data
    • Field data
    • Authenticated data
    • Object data
    • Temporary data
  • Metadata
  • MIS data
  • GIS data
