Depth to water level in Kerala State varies widely from near ground level to 55.68 metres below ground level during the month of November 2003 but mostly falls within the range of 0 – 10 mbgl as shown by 93.2 % of National Hydrograph Network Stations(NHS). The shallow water table areas with depth to water level of less than 2 mbgl are occurring in the coastal tracts of Kollam, Alappuzha, Ernakulam and Thrissur districts and also high ranges of Idukki district. The areas falling in the midland region is generally in the range of 2 – 10 mbgl. In Kasaragod, Wayanad, Palakkad, Kollam and Thiruvananthapuram districts deep water level in the range of 10 – 55.68 mbgl is noticed in certain pockets of areas where thick lateritic overburden is seen.
