Change in water level in comparison with 10 years mean      [Back] [Home]

The change in water level over the last ten years period is brought out by the comparison of April 2004 water level with the mean value of April measurements of the period 1994 – 2003.  This analysis indicates that the change in water level is mostly restricted to + 2(rise) to –2(fall) m as recorded by 89.1% of NHS.  Fall in water level is recorded by 59.5 % of NHS and rise in water level is recorded by 40.5 % of NHS.  Fall in water level is more pronounced in the districts of Malappuram, Palakkad, Kottayam and Thiruvananthapuram whereas rise in water level is more pronounced in the district of Kannur.  The rainfall distribution during the year 2003 –04 indicates that the rainfall is deficit in 9 districts with departure from normal varying from –20.6% (Kollam dist.) to –46.6% (Wayanad dist.).  Rainfall occurrence is normal in the other five districts with negative departures from normal ranging from –13.7% to –18.0%.  The overall shortage of rainfall leads to the situation of fall in water level as seen in many parts of the State.
